Carrer Avinyó

Carrer Avinyó (29)

The Carrer Avinyó goes from Carrer Ferran to Carrer Ample and you’ll often find young people here at all times of the day, because it combines centuries of tradition with modern shops, bars and fashionable restaurants.

Something very interesting about this street is that this is where the prostitutes from the port gathered, and they inspired Pablo Picasso to paint his famous work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon – the first ever cubist painting. So although the artist lived in Paris for many years, this painting is not a reference to the French town, as many believe.

At number 17 there is a renaissance building with a window decorated with two eagles and Hercules fighting a lion. Why? Because for centuries people thought that it was Hercules who had founded the city.
