The Auditorium

The Auditorium (97)

This is a modern building of over 40,000 square metres designed by the architect Rafael Moneo. It was opened in 1999 at the new hub of the city’s development, the Plaça de les Glòries, where three of Barcelona’s biggest and most important avenues converge: the Avinguda Diagonal, the Gran Via and the Avinguda Meridiana.

The building has three concert halls: 1. the Pau Casals, holding 2,200 spectators, 2. the Oriol Martorell for 600 and 3. the Tete Montoliu for 400. The acoustic of these halls was designed with the greatest care by the engineer, Higini Arau.

In the central access atrium, a cubic glass lantern has been raised. Open in the middle, it has the form of a water tank and is decorated with paintings by Pablo Palazuelo.

This same musical complex houses the headquarters of the Higher School of Music of Catalonia and the Museum of Music, which converts this building into a centre for music in its different fields of teaching, research and dissemination.
