Plaça Catalunya is in the heart of the city, and here the Ramblas begin their path down to the sea and Passeig de Gracia up towards the mountain. With a surface area of over 50,000m2, the square contains sculptures, fountains, trees, benches and small garden areas, and it is surrounded by large banks, shops, restaurants, hotels, and so on… Underneath the square is the local police station and one of the city’s tourist information offices. On three of its four corners, there are entrances to the metro, trains and the urban rail network of the Generalitat.

Plaça Catalunya is a place for strolling, meeting people, recreation, resting… You can see everything from families with their children feeding the pigeons to concerts during the city’s festivals, demonstrations and exhibitions.

The present day square corresponds to the 1929 proposal by the Barcelona School of Architecture, directed at that time by Francesc de Paula Nebot. Areas of shade and rest were planned along with other more ornamental areas, always leaving a clear path for pedestrians. In the centre of the square a compass rose showing the cardinal directions stands out.

Different sculptures, monuments and fountains by artists such as Pau Gargallo and Josep Clarà can be seen throughout the square. One of the highlights is the monument to Francesc Macià, former President of Catalonia, on the corner of carrer Pelai and The Ramblas. This work is surrounded by lawn and represents an enormous book situated on a curious inverted staircase, and was made by Josep Subirachs.
