Citadel

Citadel (17)

The citadel is a formidable, white stone fort which crowns ´Gellért Hill` and was built by the Hapsburgs after the 1848-1849 War of Independence. Its purpose was to defend ´Castle Hill` and the rest of the city from new attacks, making use of the cannons that can still be seen in the central courtyard. However, the construction was not actually finished until 1851, by which time the political situation had changed greatly. The fort has therefore never had to defend the city from hostilities.

Later, at the end of the 19th Century, the citadel was abandoned and passed into the hands of administration. In addition, as a symbolic act some parts of the building were demolished. Over the years, this structure has also been used as a prison, refuge for the poor, and is currently a tourist attraction.

Today, you will be able to find here splendid viewing points where you can hire telescopes, as well as a restaurant, hotel and nightclub. What’s more, there is also the city’s wax museum located in a Second World War bunker.
