These botanical gardens were created by Niccolò Tribolo in 1545 at the behest of Cosimo I and with the intention of collecting and cultivating exotic plants. The gardens also became a true laboratory in which medicinal plants were studied and antidotes for various poisons were sought. It is also here that the distillation of perfumes was studied. In fact the name, “Garden of simples”, refers to the simple raw ingredients that were used for preparations at the time.
The gardens currently retain the original layout of what became one of the first botanical gardens in Europe, though tropical plants and autochthonous flora of Tuscany have been incorporated.
The gardens also include rooms specialising in such topics as fossils and minerals.
