Synagogue (33)

On the Via Farini visitors will discover the Synagogue of Florence, an enormous Spanish Moorish-style building especially notable for its green bronze dome, which is visible from many parts of the city.

Cosimo I founded the Jewish Quarter in 1551, however the original church was replaced in the late 19th century by the current Synagogue, an initiative of David Levi, chairman of the Israeli University. Specifically, construction began in 1874 under the supervision of architects Mariano Felcini, Vincenzo Micheli and Marco Tregno. In addition, as a curiosity, visitors may be interested to know that the first stone used in the building was expressly brought from Jerusalem.

Also, don't forget to visit the interior, which houses Oriental mosaics and small museum where you can browse the history of the Jews in Florence and contemplate a small collection of ritual objects.
