The main attraction of the “Jerónimos” monastery is, without doubt, the two-floored cloister.
The visitor will come across it decorated with manueline motifs: the armillary sphere, royal coat of arms, marine scenes, images of high-ranking sailors and medallions. The arches and railings are decorated with traceries and elegant figures.
Its porches contain a peaceful garden which has, in one corner, a fountain in the shape of a lion, the heraldic animal of Saint Jerónimo.
In this idyllic scene lie the remains of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, which were brought there from the “Prazeres” cemetery in 1985.
