The two cloisters of the “Madre de Deus” convent are ideal places to display the marvellous collection of tiles belonging to this museum. They also comprise of two more floors.

The whole collection is ordered chronologically, starting with the oldest, most valuable tiles, which are of geometric Moorish design and can be found on the lower floor, and ending with more contemporary pieces. Tile art going back five-hundred years is on display here.

It is hard to believe that a composition of small wall tiles can mean so much. There are examples here of wild-boar hunt scenes, idyllic landscapes, creatures out of fables, the history of the hat maker Antonio Joaquim Carneiro, a true comic of the 19th century and lastly, a twenty-three metre panel depicting Lisbon before it was hit by the earthquake.

The museum’s masterpiece is a 16th century mannerist style panel of ´Our Lady of Life`, whose central mural depicts the ´Adoration of the Shepherds`. Its author, Marçal de Matos, also included various optical illusions within the image.

If, after having looked around the museum, you still want to see more, we recommend you stop at its restaurant, which is decorated with contemporary tiles of hunting specimens.
