This monument was selected among the over 5,000 projects submitted from 63 different countries and was designed by architect Michael Arad and landscapist Peter Walker. It is called Reflecting Absence and is a monument with great personality that, instead of standing up and imposing itself on the world, sinks into the very space that was occupied by the Twin Towers, which has now turned into two identical ponds sunk into the ground and surrounded by water curtains cascading from a height of 10 m into an empty centre. Such is the monument's magnitude that it features the largest man-made waterfalls in North America. Framing the pond perimeter, you will see bronze panels with the names of the 2,983 people killed in the 9/11 attacks in New York, Washington, Pennsylvania, as well as in the attack on 26 February 1993. The names are arranged in groups, according to their "significant proximity", hence reflecting where the victims of 9/11 were and the relationships they shared with other victims on that day, the aim being to respect the wishes of the victims' families insofar as some specific names were to be located near each other.

Since its opening in September 2011, more than 23 million visitors have come to get a first-hand look at the Memorial. Among whom, great public figures of international politics, such as Angela Merkel, Tony Blair or even Pope Francis I.
