The Mall

The Mall (126)

Welcome to the Mall, the stately and magnificent Central Park Avenue that invites you to travel through time.

Sitting on any bank of this wide promenade, it will be easy for you to go back to the early 20th century and imagine fine ladies and distinguished gentlemen of New York's high society, meeting or walking in order to see and be seen. Indeed, after more than a century of history, the Mall still looks as splendid as on the very first day.

Formal, elegant and majestic, this long, straight promenade contrasts with most of the park's natural passages. Nicknamed "Cathedral of the Elms", it exudes a special magic which enchants New Yorkers of all races, ages and cultures. You will encounter couples strolling under the rows of elms, inquisitive people photographing the numerous statues, nannies taking care of their babies and skaters ... Although, in the morning, the scene is completely different: the Mall becomes a very quiet place, ideal to escape the city bustle.

Discovering the Mall is an amazing experience, and, undoubtedly, the most impressive stretch for all visitors is the one located south of the main avenue. It will be very easy for you to recognise it, because the entire section is covered by a sublime dome of American elms, under which lie statues of famous people, such as Christopher Columbus, writers William Shakespeare, Walter Scott and Robert Burns, or composers Victor Herbert and Beethoven. Named Literary Walk, this walk stretch boasts one of the largest concentrations of American elms.
