Passages Couverts

Passages Couverts (67)

In these delightful Passages Couverts or covered passages you will find elegant, modern and traditional shops all mixed together. From metallic toys that your great-grandparents probably played with to elegant clothes and accessories shops, seasoned with traditional chocolate shops, cybercafes and bookshops with very, very old editions. Without doubt, if you are in this area, wandering through these glass tunnels will be a real pleasure and evocative.

The majority of these passages were built in the first half of the 19thcentury with the clear aim of providing Parisians with the possibility of going shopping without having to worry about the weather, the noise from the street or the dirt resulting from the lack of drains and pavements.

In the mid-19th century people from the provinces came shopping in the big city at a time when there were as many as 150 covered passages where as well as shopping, you could eat, go to the theatre, take a bath and, in the evening, perhaps enjoy the services of a lady escort. In the busiest passages, you could enjoy all of this twenty-four hours a day.

With the appearance of the first big department stores, such as Le Bon Marché in 1852, the covered passages began to disappear. Today there are just under 20 remaining and we sincerely recommend you visit them.
