Place Pigalle

Place Pigalle (70)

If this square is known for anything it is for being the sex square.

In fact, today it is the epicentre of a large number of sex-shops, peep-shows, strip clubs and cabarets which are only recommendable for adults. Whoever approaches this area at night does so because they want to have fun.

On both the left and right sides of the square, towards the Boulevard Clichy and Boulevard de Rochechouart, you will kinds of shows related to sex. Emblematic venues such as the Moulin Rouge and other rather more risqué and less known ones. It is said that during the Second World War it was where the soldiers came to pass their free time and nicknamed the area Pig Alley.

If you prefer something a little gentler and more cultural, you can also visit the Museum of Eroticism at number 79 Boulevard de Clichy.

Nevertheless, in this area you will also be able to find good shops, pretty cafés and art galleries, because in the 19th century it was an area much frequented by artists. Remember that Toulouse Lautrec had his Studio here, for example.

Towards the north, you will be able to go into the Montmartre district, full of artists, old-fashioned cafés and bohemian alleyways that we recommend you discover.

And to the south of Place Pigalle, in contrast, you will come across an area built from 1820, the district known as the “Nouvelle Athènes”, which still conserves all its romantic spirit of this epoch with neoclassical buildings, English-style gardens and vaulted passageways, where artists such as Degas, Chopin and Dumas all lived. Without doubt, it is a lovely walk towards Rue de la Châteaudun, going towards the Passages Couverts, luxurious glass passageways with traditional shops with cameras, books, toys and other antiques. A true delight.
