Montparnasse Tower

Montparnasse Tower (47)

With its 210 metres height and 59 storeys, the Montparnasse Tower is the tallest skyscraper in France. As its name indicates, it is in the Montparnasse district, which at one time had been one of the most bohemian areas of Paris.

Once again, the Parisians decided to complain about the construction of a building. This tower, visible from any point of the city, caused a lot of complaints, since they thought that such a tall building would break the aesthetics of the Paris skyline. The tower certainly stands out, whatever your opinion.

For you, however, the best thing about it is the incredible views of Paris it gives you. From no other part of the city will get such a scene. You can go up to its rooftop terrace. On a clear day your view may reach up to 40 kilometres away.

You will also be able to experience the feeling of going up in the fastest lift in Europe, 56 floors in 38 seconds.

The history of the tower dates back to 1934. At that time the old Montparnasse station could no longer absorb more traffic and it was becoming obsolete. The government planned to restructure the district and build a new station. But it was not until 1969 that the work began to be carried out. The project included the transfer of the station and opening up of new and better streets. They also planned the construction of a tower, which was what caused the most controversy.

The Montparnasse Tower is an office building made in curved steel and smoked glass between 1969 and 1972, on the site previously occupied by the old station. The station is currently opposite the tower. The high speed train leaves from here which links Paris with the south of France.

On the 56th floor you will be able to see an interesting exhibition, and have a drink in its panoramic bar. We advise you not to miss the views that the Montparnasse Tower offers you, Paris will be at your feet.
