If you have enough time on your visit to Fira, we'd encourage you to explore the Megaro Gyzi Museum. As you'll see, it is located in an old seventeenth century mansion, which is a magnificent example of Cycladic architecture. 

Founded in 1980 with the aim of preserving and sharing the few remnants that survived the earthquake of 1956, the Megaro Gyzi Museum houses an interesting collection of manuscripts from the 16th to the nineteenth century, as well as engravings, traditional clothing, maps, paintings and an important photographic archive, which contains photos of Santorini before and after the devastating earthquake.

In addition to the exhibits, take the opportunity to admire its architectural details, since it is one of the few buildings that survived the earthquake of the last century. Take a pleasant stroll through its courtyard and the various rooms that have been restored with considerable skill.

Besides the permanent exhibition, the museum is also home to the Cultural Centre of Santorini, which organises a range of cultural events such as exhibitions, concerts, film screenings and traditional dances.

The aim of the Cultural Centre is to maintain and raise awareness of the rich culture of the whole island among residents, friends and visitors alike.
