Situated in between Passeig de Lluís Companys and Passeig de Sant Joan, the Arc de Triomf was the gateway to the Universal Exhibition of 1888. It is the work of architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas. It is an exposed brick structure of Neo-Mudéjar inspiration and stands 30 metres tall. Several artists contributed to the decoration of the arch, and upper part works by Josep Llimona, Josep Reynés, Torquat Tassó and Antoni Vilanova can be seen.
The best known side is that by Josep Reynés, called: “Barcelona receives the nations”, which represents the participation of all the countries in the Exhibition and the city of Barcelona welcoming them.
There are also 12 statues of women which symbolise fame.
The Barcelona arch is different from other triumphal arches with a marked military character, in that it stands in praise of artistic, scientific and economic progress.
On the left of the Arc de Triomf, original buildings from the 1888 exhibition still stand. They are the Pere Vila school by Josep Godoy and the Palace of Justice by Enric Sagnier and Joseph Domènec i Estapà.
