At 291, Carrer de Mallorca you will find another of the works of genius of the architect Domènech i Montaner, the designer of the Casa Lleó Morera, the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Hospital de Sant Pau, among other works.

Domènech was not just an architect of genius. He studied physics and the natural sciences; he was an enthusiast for Mineralogy, Botany and Zoology; he was an outstanding draughtsman and writer... And in his particular brand of modernism he knew how to combine the characteristics of this current with Arabic and Hispanic influences, with ornamentation in ceramics, glass and wrought iron, all of which is reflected in his various buildings.

In the Casa Thomas, built between 1895 and 1898, these signs of identity appear for the first time, as in its Neo-Gothic front, the bluish hues and the foyer with floral motifs and figures of reptiles.

Originally, this building consisted of just the workshop and the first floor, where the proprietor, the engraver Thomas, lived. But later, in 1912, the building was developed. Various more floors were added, some very elegant tribunes were installed and the towers at a higher level were respected.

Lower down the same street, at Number 278, you will find the Palau Montaner. A building begun by Domènech i Estapà but finished by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. This is where his cousin Ramon Montaner lived, the boss of Montaner i Simon Publishers, current seat of the Tàpies Foundation, in the Carrer d’Aragó.
