Ciutadella – Castell dels Tres Dragons

Ciutadella – Castell dels Tres Dragons (43B)

The Castell dels Tres Dragons (Castle of the Three Dragons), designed by modernist architect Domenech i Montaner, started out life as a café-restaurant for the Universal Exhibition of 1888.

Constructed using facing brick, which was unusual for the time, it is one of the first examples of Modernism in Barcelona. The building's battlements, frieze of shields and sobriety confer it a certain medieval air and emphasize the eclectic amalgam of Catalan arches, large Roman windows and Moorish-inspired arches.

From 1920 to 2010 the building housed the headquarters of what were, at the time, the Zoology and Geology Museums, the latter being housed in the building located near the Castell dels Tres Dragons and which is the work of Antoni Rovira i Trias. In 2000 the two museums were merged to form the Natural Sciences Museum and, in 2010, many of the exhibitions ended up moving to the Museu Blau in the Parc del Forum.

The Castell dels Tres Dragons currently houses the Laboratori de Natura (Nature Laboratory), where many of the research activities of the Museum of Natural Sciences are carried out.
