Barcelona always surprises. It has known how to create in its streets, squares and parks a kind of authentic open-air museum.

Very close to the Plaça Espanya, the Parc de Joan Miró covers a considerable area, equivalent to four complete blocks of the Eixample. It was one of the first parks to be laid out in a space occupied by obsolete urban facilities, for until 1979 it was the site of the municipal slaughter-house. This is why the park is also known as the “Parc de l’Escorxador” (Park of the Slaughterhouse).

It is an area that local residents use a lot, as it consists of narrow shaded lanes with pergolas, a broad area where children and adolescents can play and even a large library. However, the most notable feature of the park is undoubtedly the huge sculpture by Joan Miró.

“Dona i Ocell”, Woman and Bird, a 22-metre high concrete sculpture is surrounded by a pond that protects it. As is usual in Miró’s works, it is covered with ceramic tiles painted in the artist’s classic colours: yellow, red and blue. The sculpture was finished in 1982, the year before Joan Miró’s death.
