To visit this area, your starting point will be Plaça d’Espanya.

The large roundabout in the centre contains a monumental fountain, the work of architect Josep Maria Jujol, one of Gaudí’s disciples.

Designed in 1928 it as homage to water, each of sculptural groups represents one of the three seas which bathe the Spanish coastline. All of the sculptures are by Miquel Blai.

There is the Mediterranean, with the River Ebre represented as a young, athletic man surrounded by other young people; the Atlantic, with the Tagus and Guadalquivir rivers represented as two old people with their respective ‘courts’ of young affluent; and the Cantabrian with a group of adolescents who represent the short, fast rivers of its hydrological basin.

The three columns, which previously carried inscriptions, represent Religion, Art and Heroism; with personifications in the corners of Navigation, Health and Abundance are all the work of the Oslé brothers.

The fountain is topped by a bowl surrounded by three Victories in bronze by the sculptor Llovet. On special occasions it is lit up.

In the Plaça d’Espanya you can also see the façade (which is all that remains) of the Las Arenas bullring, opened in 1900. It was built in the neo-Arabic style by August Font i Carreras.
