Plaça Villa de Madrid

Plaça Villa de Madrid (50)

This square was occupied by a Carmelite convent up to the Civil War. Following reurbanisation in 1956 a Roman cemetery was discovered in the place where the convent had stood.

The cemetery dates from the 2nd century and has around 100 graves which can be seen in a grass area on a lower level, situated either side of one of the roads which gave access to the walled city. The Romans planned everything very carefully and at their access routes they normally had a place to conduct funerals, made up of different shaped monuments parallel to the road. Those which can be seen here are simple chest-shaped constructions.
