In a privileged spot in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, just at the end of the Portal de l’Angel and very close to the cathedral is the Palau Pignatelli, home to the Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona or Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona.
The Cercle Artístic was founded in 1881, but in 1884 it became known as the Watercolour Artists’ Centre, and it recovered its original name three years later. In 1916 King Alfons XIII bestowed on it the title of Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona.
It became the centre of Barcelona’s artistic and social life, especially during the last few years of the 19th and the first two decades of the 20t6h century.
Having occupied a series of different premises it was not until 1959 that it was established in the old Pignatelli Palace, at number 5 Carrer dels Arcs.
This historic building houses an artistic archive of approximately 500 works and a library with more 6,000 works, largely related to the History of Art.
The main aim of the Circle is to promote and give support to all kinds of artistic and cultural activities.
The interior of the building is for members only, although you can enjoy the restaurant with its lovely terrace. You can also visit an interesting permanent exhibition with more than 500 works by Dalí.
