Venetian towers in Barcelona? Well, yes actually!

They are placed between the two large columns which close the Plaça d’Espanya by Puig i Cadafalch and the first of the exhibition palaces: the Textile palace on the right and the Communications and Transport Palace on the left.

These twin towers were built in 1928 according to the plans of architect Ramon Reventós i Farrarons, who was also involved in the Greek Theatre and Spanish Village projects, both included in the overall Exhibition project.

They used the bell tower of the Saint Mark’s in Venice as a model and that is how they got their name – the Venetian Towers as they are popularly known. Both towers are 47 metres high and form the perfect decoration for the Avinguda Maria Cristina: a broad avenue of small palaces, open staircases, fountains and sculptures which leads to the great Palau Nacional. Designed by Pere Domènech it was restored by Lluís Cantallops in 1985.
