Leading from the Baixa area to the Bairro Alto is the street called “Rúa da Glória”, whose steep slope is recommended only to the truly brave. This being the case, in October of 1885 the Glória elevator tram was opened here.
Its route starts from the square named “Praça dos Restauradores” and is, despite not offering spectacular views, one of the most ridden, possibly due to the high numbers of tourists that use it.
At the route’s end you will be able to dive into the fascinating world of the Bairro Alto, with its fado bars and picturesque restaurants, without forgetting to stop at the “Sao Pedro de Alcántara” viewing point, from where you can enjoy wonderful views of the “Sao Jorge” castle.
This tram also operates at night due to the fact that the Bairro Alto never sleeps. In the 19th century the cabin relied on candles for light.
With the advent of electricity and fluorescents, the romanticism of candles ended, however it is still a memorable experience to ride up and down in such a famous funicular. A true rise to glory was never better expressed.
