Immense, radiant and revealing, the “Jerónimos de Belém” monastery could be described as the most important monument in the whole of Lisbon.

The building is immense in its sheer size, containing 300 metres of facades. It is also renowned for the length of time dedicated to building it, almost a century, as well as its high cost, five percent of the country’s annual overseas` trade profits at the time.

It is radiant because, on the banks of the Tajo, its manueline Portuguese design lights up the whole area.

It is revealing for what it tells us about the Lisbon of the past: a city in its heyday, a trade centre and cultural force, a European power and focal point for marine conquests. The greatness of Lisbon’s sea-faring exploration is conveyed through this building which wasn’t built until the return home of one of history’s most famous explorers, Vasco de Gama.
