All the sections of paving in the shape of a fan on the Piazza del Campo converge at the stunning Palazzo Comunale or Palazzo Pubblico. Undoubtedly, this is the most fascinating palace of those surrounding the square.

It was built between 1288 and 1342 and, of course, is one of the most graceful and creative of the Italian Gothic. Even so, its foundation dates back to 1297, at the time of the Council of Nine, to house some public offices and, even today, it exercises the functions of the City Hall. 

The ground floor is made of stone and the upper floors of brick. Its curious structure gives form to the Piazza del Campo itself, because its façade is slightly concave, giving the building a unique personality.

In addition, it also houses the Museo Civico, full of works of important medieval and Renaissance artists of Siena. Among others, we highlight the poetic fresco of "Maestà" by Simone Martini, made in 1315. There you can see the image of the Virgin depicted as the Queen of Heaven and venerated by apostles, saints and angels. Martini is also famous for "Guidoriccio da Fogliano", an unusual equestrian portrait of the mercenary of the same name. 

The work entitled "Allegory of Good and Bad Government" by Ambrogio Lorenzetti from 1338 is equally important. This is a painting of a political nature that was created as a tribute to the Council of Nine, former rulers of the city.
